Essex County Massachusetts Homes for Sale and Real Estate Listings

Essex County is located in the northeastern section of Massachusetts.  It was created by the Massachusetts General Court in 1643 as an original county.  It is named after Essex County in England, and Salem is the county seat. The population was 723,419 as of the 2000 census. Essex County has a total area of 829 square miles, with 501 square miles of land and 328 square miles of water. Adjacent counties are: Rockingham County, New Hampshire to the north; Suffolk County to the south; and Middlesex County to the west. The Atlantic Ocean is to the east.

The City of Salem, founded in 1626, was a major seaport in early America and was the location of the 1692 Salem Witch Trials.  Salem has numerous historical sites, including the House of Seven Gables, made famous by Nathanial Hawthorne who was born there, the Witch House, and the Peabody Essex Museum.

The City of Gloucester, settled in 1623, is America’s oldest seaport and home to America’s oldest art colony. In the 1800s, the cities of Lawrence and Lowell used the abundant water power of the Merrimack River to run their numerous textile mills.
