Middlesex County is one of 14 counties in Massachusetts, with Hillsborough County, New Hampshire to the north, Essex County to the northeast, Suffolk County to the southeast, Norfolk County to the south, and Worcester County to the west. Middlesex County was created in 1643 by the Massachusetts General Court and was named for Middlesex County, England. It is the most densely populated county in Massachusetts and in New England. As of the 2000 census there were 1,465,396 people. It has a total area of 848 square miles, of which 823 square miles is land and 24 square miles is water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The Town of Natick is the center of population in Middlesex County. Cambridge and Lowell are the county seats, and Lowell is the largest city. The county is in the Boston-Cambridge-Quincy metro area.
Middlesex County was where the War of the American Revolution began, with the “Shot heard ‘round the world” and describes the battle at Old North Bridge, in Concord, on April 19, 1775. Concord was the home of many literary giants, including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Louisa May Alcott, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry David Thoreau.
Two of the major industries of the 18th and 19th centuries were textiles and shoe manufacturing. Middlesex County is a major educational center and is the home of
Harvard University in Cambridge. Harvard was founded in 1636 and is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States.
