Suffolk County is located in Massachusetts and was named after Suffolk, England. It was created in 1643 by the Massachusetts General Court. Adjacent counties are Essex County to the north, Norfolk County to the south, and Middlesex County to the west. Boston, the state capital and largest city, is the county seat. The population was 689,807 as of the 2000 census. The county has a total area of 120 square miles, with 59 square miles of land and 62 square miles of water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

The Boston Marathon is the world’s oldest annual marathon, which began in 1897, and takes place each third Monday in April.
